You might not think a whole lot about the amount of potassium you intake. In fact, most people get just enough potassium by eating foods that are already a part of our every day diets. Unfortunately, if you suffer from a potassium deficiency you might find that there are many life threatening issues that can occur. Thankfully potassium problems are rare, but you should always look out for changes in your body, so you can ensure your health is at its best.

Potassium deficiencies can go without symptoms in many people. However, in many a lack of potassium can actually cause your muscles and nerves to malfunction. One of the biggest indications that you might be having a problem with your potassium intake is if you notice that your body is having a lot more cramps than normal. If this happens you might want to eat foods rich in potassium, like a banana, or take a vitamin to see if the problem goes away. Problems with the muscles and nerves should always be monitored as a major potassium problem could actually lead to paralysis in some.

Problems with your potassium levels could also effect the way your heart balances out. A low amount of potassium can increase heart disease and can even make it increase faster in people who already have problems. Many people have seen a great reduction in the problem when they use potassium supplements to increase their body's potassium needs.

You should always be aware of any changes in your body. Potassium deficiencies are rare amongst many people so shouldn't panic. Many of these problems can be avoided if you take potassium supplements most of your problems should subside. Of course, it is important to see a doctor if you have extreme pains or problems that do not go away after a couple of days.
